Aw man, I am terribly sorry to hear about V6.

I don't believe in the conspiracy theory. In my experience, SI is honest and reputable. Not discount but fair. If you can get a ride, you could stop by and inspect the car yourself to see the damage and how it occured. It should be easily visible.

They are correct in saying that the crankshaft pulley does not need to be removed to access the timing belt. In fact, this is the first time I've EVER heard of V6 failure due to the crankshaft pulley. (Yet another thing to worry about?) Anders, what about you?

First thing I would do is call the dealer who installed the timing belt and explain what happened. I would be polite but firm, saying that their work should be waranteed and therefore they are responsible. I think you have an uphill battle but it's worth a shot. I would not disclose anything about how it happened until they look at it. A reasonable outcome with the old t-belt shop would be to say you will pay part of the cost if they give you a substantial discount. I would want to firmly agree on a dollar figure, say $1500 or so. But don't say that first -- get them to acknowledge that they warranty their work. I wouldn't acknowledge a willingness to pay anything until they first look at it. If they balk (immediately or after they look at it) and completely shirk responsibility, I would then go direct to SAAB USA and the Zone Rep and complain about the t-belt dealer. And tell the dealer before you call.

Good luck! Tough call. I can tell you for a fact that if I ever have t-belt failure at my mileage (148k) I will dump the car. Too old and too many miles to justify the cost for me. At your mileage it's a much tougher call; you're sort of on the cusp.
