I recently purchased a 97 900 SET w/67k. I have had no problems. I had the 65k mile major service done at my local indie. Total cost was around $500. I do not anticipate any major cost before the next major service. I have read that ac compressors, di cassettes, and clutch cables can be a problem however all of mine seem to be in good working order.
My fuel economy is roughly 20 and 27. I just got back from a road trip where I averaged 23 or so, but I had the roof rack and two bikes on and was driving in very windy conditions.
The turbo is a blast to drive. The car definitely can move. I do not think that my car has lost any power even though it is 7 years old. If all of the service records are up to date then you should not have any problems. I purchased mine sight unseen because of the low miles and the up to date service.
