Assure that all the service is to date and properly done.
This was not the case with my ex-VW Passat - even though the PO paid for professional service and at a "good" place.. I spent many, many hours bringing the maintenance up to date and repairing too many mistakes, and made some mistakes of my own- the rear brakes are very tricky on a B3 VR6!!
Now I will do the same on this '96 900S. Under the hood ( thank you, Saab, for using struts) I have already found the coolant reservoir to be mis-mounted.. Then I should do the fluids and filters, plugs, etc..And the snake belt(aka serpentine belt)..
This will be the 140k mile service.. I have no idea what has and what has not been done..
I need to find out about the timing chain, there is or was a way of measuring it...And it is not good to wait for a slapping noise to occur,IMO..
My last Saab was a '79 900, drove it to 160k then totally wrecked it - they are indeed a very strong automobile. The seats and headliner are weaknesses, the body and engine last a very long time.
Use of synthetic transmission fluid(forget the brand - Mobil I ?? 75-90) allows the gearbox to be trouble free, but the synchronizers were worn..
