My wife and I are expecting our first child in about two months, so it's time to look for something a little more spacious than her Miata. Her first car was an Accord hatch, so she's a little partial to hatchbacks and there's no denying the utility value of the NG900/9-3, so when one popped up locally, we went to look at it.
It's a '96 SET with about 79k on it. It's not a perfect car, the brakes were a little soft, as was the clutch take-up, the motor for the rear of the drivers' seat didn't work, it took several tries to get the power locks to work, one of the fog light lenses is broken and it has just a bit of surface? rust at a dent on the driver's rear door/fender. On the plus side, it's been serviced at the local Saab dealer, both heated seats work, the headlight wipers work, has new Yokohamas, the calipers all work, and the interior is in pretty good shape.
The lot (Suzuki dealer) was originally asking $8900 for it, but had an "make offer" sign in the windshield. After driving it I told the salesman the points of concern, he went and talked to the manager, and came back with an offer of $6600. If the car were in great shape, I think that's about what it would be worth, maybe more around $7k. I figure the clutch job is about $1000, replacing the fog light lens is about $250 (on my '95 the bumper cover has to come off, I assume '96 is the same), I have no idea what fixing the seat will run, maybe $500?, and body work will be at least $500. With all that in mind, I think a better price for the car is $5000, maybe $5500. What do you folks think, am I being realistic or not? We are going to look at other cars, but the market is really small in Central PA and it looks like it's a couple hour drive to look at our alternative vehicles.

thanks, Mike
