Pulled the thing apart & did top-end work as previously intended (plugs weren't fouled) and got it back together in about 2.5 hours. Car was still sluggish/running fat. I intended to limp it back to my house from parents' garage, got about ten miles driving on expressway as power loss became increasingly noticable. Pulled off on exit, and started to smell a metallic burning smell followed immediately by gray smoke! I got it off the road in front of strip mall (& ran into a Great Clips and comandeered a fire extinguisher!) and got the fire out.
The catalytic converter must have been gummed up all along! I have heard that the particulate in there can fuse and cause a blockage. Anyways, all the signs were there, when I really think about it. The ignition key has been extremely hot when I take it out of the ignition ever since the funny idle & power loss began. Add that to the power loss (the car ran like it was constipated!) and me thinks the problem found me before I had the chance to find it. No codes were ever tripped, even as the asbestos shielding burned beneath the car, so that is a little unnerving.
Has anybody EVER heard of this happening before with a SAAB?
Have I been absolutely negligent to have let the converter get that bad?
I had a new exhaust from Meineke put on a few weeks back and then inspected the asbestos shielding (but they didn't perform a pressure test on the converter.)
Any thoughts/comments are appreciated. Feel free to rip into me if I have missed something obvious. I can take it.
