So perhaps without a 2nd O2 sensor, a defective CAT would not be detected. The CAT will overheat if there is unburnt fuel and free oxygen. And was not running right. If too much fuel, the CAT still does not have oxygen to work with to get hot. And in that case, the first or only O2 sensor will see that as a problem. A cylinder that is too lean to ignite can fire up a CAT.
Question: Was is justs running weak or was it rough and missing?
Perhaps a problem with a coil would do something like this. There are some wires that have been reported before, that you have to watch for that can get pinched when reassembling, but I cannot recall which.
There will not be any asbestos, something else.
