Head Bolt Retorque Question

Okay, after my recent child seat dilema, I'm finally ready to do the head bolt retorque on my 96 900s. I've got a small seep on the right side of the motor and have to retop the coolant about once every three months. I've got the torque wrench (sears), e-16 torx, 8 inch extension, and the townsend bulletin. After reading a few posts on the procedure I'm a little confused.
I thought you loosen bolt one and torque to 30 lbs, and then do the same to bolt 2, then 3 etc. After all the bolts are set to 30 lbs then move each bolt up to 44lbs and repeat the pattern. Finally do the 90 degree turn on each bolt and your done. There appears to be some confusion on the procedure with some people doing one bolt at a time with all three steps, seems counter productive to me and would not allow the pressure to be even during the retorque. What exactly is the correct method to follow? Hope that makes sense.
