Well I was somewhat confused too.
I loosened 1 bolt at a time and re torqued to 44lbs and then 90 degrees. Basically one step.
I felt that this was correct because the gasket had already been crusched down to its current position and I did not have to easy the head onto it.
I am not a mechanic and am learning as I go. All seemed to go well.
