Try using the top tonight. If the owner brought it in to be diagnosed and then declined work on the tonneau motor, something is probably up. Ask about getting a brace kit to go on the tonneau motor. Without it, eventually the tonneau will start slipping and you will cry for your mommy.
As for the shifter, from what I've heard around here the clutch was upgraded to hydraulic in 1998, so I suppose that's something to consider upgrading. I dont have personal experience with that, as I have an automatic.
I have a 97 900s non turbo convertable, and love it. When I got it, it too had a problem with its tonneau motor, which the dealer fixed for me gratis. If your importer is willing to do that for you, more power to ya!
