Not good news... I know.
The leak can only get worse. If you plan to DIY this eventually, doing in mild fall weather beats working in the dead of winter. Someone posted step by step on this.
The core 'plugs in' to feed through pipes in the firewall. And guess what, this is sealed by o-rings. And o-rings get hard in hot coolant over time, just like the pump adapter. Maybe a water pump lubricating addative could be tried that might list that it conditions pump seals. Perhaps that might soften/swell the o-rings. Might be whistling in the dark, but its a cheap bottle of self denial at worst :)
I have not seen a judgment about the cores been on and the o-rings only needing to be renewed. With good coolant over the years, the cores might be tip-top and only the soft parts are failing. ???
