Thanks to SaabNet, I was prepared. Count me as one of the lucky ones.

This one, 9633 = Manufactured 33rd week of 1996, lasted until this past week 0444. :-) I am at 136K+ miles on my 1997 NG900SET, so I guess I skew the curve of "reported" failures. In addition, my death was not final, as I experienced stumbling/misfiring first, which occurred after the car was heated up across the entire RPM/boost range and at idle. I believe this helps confirm it is a heat issue. I drove a considerable amount before I was able to service. I simply had to stay below boost to minimize.

First I checked the plugs, which looked normal, although a few were out of gap to specs. I started to "clean" them and regap, then said to heck with it, and I replaced with the new ones I had there. This helped with idle and some boost, but once warm and at mid-to-full boost, "roughness" came back. So, I said my goodbyes, and swapped with the spare I had. No burning epoxy smell, or oil oozing, and no cracks. I did get a very faint oil smell from the boot over number 1, but that's it.

Now I am back to smooth, except for the bucking I get at WOT due to fuel-cut. Guess I have to adjust the MBC+A due to the cooler weather. :-) Only downside is my spare is 9639. So I will be looking for a new one, although I see the price is now up to $340. Hopefully this one will last me until after I finish my suspension.

Thanks everyone! Go get your spares!!!!
