Thanks Mike,
At the moment I'm bench testing Hylomar blue, a red semi-permanent gasket and blue silicone by bonding a strip of the rubber to a piece of stainless steel. I'll leave it on overnight and then shear test.
Last night I carefully cut out templates and then four nitrile rubber (1 mm thick) gaskets that fit exactly on top of the head. I intend to degrease the head thoroughly and stick the gaskets to the head - at the moment with the semi-hardening red gasket. I will then leave it for 24 hours to cure. I will also cut out 8x nitrile discs to go on top of the cam covers where the bolt goes in and fix in the same way. What I'm hoping for is that if the crappy thin "o" ring does no t do all of the sealing, then the two edges of the cover biting into the nitrile will do the job.
I note your good advice re not stripping the cover bolts.
I intend to then fit the cover "o" rings (2 x 2 large shaped "o" rings and the 8x small "o" rings) in place with a little dab of Hylomar blue and again let cure.
I will then put a thin film of Hylomar blue along the top of the nitrile gaskets and loosely tighten down the valve covers and again leave to let the Hylomar blue cure. I will then tighten down and hope for the best!
I agree my riskiest spots will be the arch over the camshaft seal and the half-moons. I intend to fit a nitrile strip acoss the cam seal arches and then Hylomar blue the spot where it meets the flat nitrile gasket. I can't easily do this for the half moons and it additionally they may not fit afterwards so I will add plenty of Hylomar blue to the half moons before assembly.
Sounds like belt and braces but I don't want to revisit them so soon.
