A/C woes return...help/suggestions needed... Posted by Clay McNeely [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Hello, everyone. When I purchased my 1996 Saab 900 SE Turbo towards the beginning of May of this year, the previous owner stated that the A/C needed recharged at the start of the summer season each year due to a very slow leak. I instructed him to have the leak repaired prior to me buying the car, so he took it in and had the shop work their magic. They replaced the expansion valve and claimed to have fixed a few small leaks throughout the system for about $800. When I purchased the car, everything seemed to be in working order.
A couple weeks later, however, the A/C began to blow warm/hot air and gradually got worse. I took the car in to my local indy (different than original shop in Chicago) and they replaced the expansion valve (again) and recharged the system for about $700 (a few other small non-A/C related repairs were also done). The system worked perfectly all summer long until a few days ago. The A/C has now begun to blow warm/hot air again and I am quite frustrated. When I start the car and the system is engaged, I can smell an odor coming from the vents and it eventually begins to smell like new tires...that's the best I can describe it, anyway. I have posted several messages regarding my previous A/C woes, so you can click on my name (or perform a search) and view the symptoms I was receiving then.
When I purchased the car, there was a slight intermittent hissing coming from behind the glove compartment. As the A/C got worse, the hissing became more frequent and louder. When the A/C was "fixed", the hissing went back to its normal self and was only apparent on occasion and wasn't overly-annoying. Now, once again, it is louder, more frequent, and much more obnoxious. If the expansion valve has failed for the third time in the past 6 months, is there something that will cause it to fail? I'm really hoping it is still under warrantee because I am not at all pleased with this situation. I completely trust my Saab-exclusive indy, but would I be better off taking the car to an A/C specialist instead? Are there any diagnosis tests I can perform myself? Also, any suggestions as to the source of the odor are more than welcome.
If any questions may arise for clarification purposes, or if you have any suggestions, feedback, responses, or answers, please feel free to post. Thank you very much in advance for any/all help. Drive safely, and KEEP ON SAABING!!!
