With the lower temps the tire rubber is stiffer. Combine that with the lower tire pressure induced by the lower ambient temperatures and you get more flex of a stiffer sidewall. Correct your cold tire pressures and perhaps add more air in anditicpation of what the temperatures will soon be.
The T5 system does indeed loose some efficiency in cold weather... compared to the T7s.
The fuel is less volitile when cold and that may effect how the engine works. Good plugs and clean injectors will probably minimize this effect. Suggest Techron Concentrate every 8K or 3x/year.
You have a NA engine? It is 10.5 compression ratio and should be quite efficienent as a result. But the ECU can only take proper advantage of that CR with higher octane fuels. Expect a penaly with low octane fuel. With the high compression engine, combustion chamber deposits form hot spots that create acquired. Techron Concentrate can remove the worst of the deposits and lower octane demand that can then allow the ECU to use better tuning.
Draging brakes eat gas.
A cold 5 spd gear box wastes a lot of energy and takes a long time to warm up! Converting it to Saab synthetic GB oil will help. The 4 wheel bearings and 4 CV joints also waste engergy when cold and will not warm up in cold weather. Autobox tranies warm up faster as they share the radiator for cooling, which warms them up.
A true synthetic engine oil will improve MPGs relative to dyno oil. Suggest Mobil 1 0W40 or 5W40.
Roof racks kill MPGs.
Fuels posted as having 10% ethanol will lower MPGs by 5 or 6%.
Cross winds and head winds both can hit the MPGs quite hard.
Cold air is denser and that increases wind drag that lowers MPGs.
