replacing distributor - estimate and questions

hello. just had my 96 900s in the shop - mentioned that it was dripping something and he said it's the distributor. i've been reading this forum and it sounds like this is a pretty common and easy to fix problem. he estimates parts and labor ("replace dist., ign. wires") at $490. he quoted me the distributor alone at $350 (rebuilt). from everything i've read on this site, this seems wildly excessive to me. i'm feeling like i should find a rebuilt distributor and take it pretty much anywhere. (the threads here say it's a DIY project, actually.)
any thoughts on that?
additionally, he said that he tried to just replace the seal from inside the distributor, but that the metal was crimped around the seal - so he couldn't get it out. does that sound right? (i've seen other thread with the link to the page that shows how to replace the seal - but i didn't notice anything about crimped metal against the seal.)
finally, is the distributor replacement REALLY a diy project? on an old sentra, i've done my own oil, replaced a starter, and replaced the spark plug wires etc. but this makes me nervous...
anyway, any comments you have are greatly appreciated. this forum has been extremely helpful to me on several occasions...
thanks
chris
