Driving a Turbo, convertible at 18, and assuming you are a single male, means you will be paying as much as you could possibly pay for insurance. However, that might not be that much depending on the state. In California, that combination would be lethal to almost any budget.

Performance wise, the turbo is, as you know, the way to go. I know the convertible motor is prone to failure. I do not know which year has an improved version of it, or if there is an after market option. Aside from the convertible motor, the problems with these cars are usually the same. Direct Ignition Cassette, AC related issues, water pump, etc. All of these are well know and you could do it yourself depending on your level of expertise. Aside from that, these are very reliable cars with the usual maintenance associated with any vehicle.

Shy away from the 96 and earlier which run on a clutch cable. That would be one less headache to deal with.
