Funny smell story

We have been having the usual issues with our 120K GM 96 Saab 900 turbo car - water pump, alternator...an unplugged seat motor.... anyway my auto-saturated Wife reported that the dash light for low coolent was on. SO I checked - yup low, so I added some. Then she reported a 'chemical smell' so checked again and found a hose leaking, tightened the clamp (my mistake), leak stopped. She still reported a chemical smell, so I ran the car in the drive for some time, and sure enough, the leak had stopped and there was no smell. So I took it out for a test drive, yup chemical smell - but not coolent, more like buring wires. So I looked close at the engine compartment, yup smell, but I could see nothing. So I filled the tank up and stood there in front of the thing. Finally I looked under the car. - There was a large plastic department store shopping bag melted onto the exhaust system! The drive home was enough to soften the plastic so I could scrape it off.
