The rotors on '97 to ??? 900's are a bit larger than on the '95 to '96. The Calipers are also a bit sturdier. I replaced mine because I had an issue with one of the calipers sticking, not because of braking problems.
If you had fade after 1 hard stop, either your brake pads are not the best, or your brake fluid is old. Lower end pads will gas at a lower temp causing the pads to float on a layer of gas (This is the real reason to get either slotted or drilled rotors to let the gas escape, not coolling). If you fluid is old it has taken on water and has a much lower boiling point. Once the water boils in the fluid, your brake pedal will feel mushy and can easily sink to the floor under moderate pressure. This happened to me at the track. I now use Motul brake fluid only.
