Strange ACC behavior (long)

My son is now driving my Old Blue Saab (1996 900SET 112k mi). Last weekend, he and four friends did a weekend road trip to Berkeley and back from L.A.
When he got back, he reported some strange one-time ACC behavior. They were cruising in the 80-85mph range on level ground, the outside temeperature was in the 40s, it was drizzling on and off. Assume about half a ton of passengers and luggage on board. Coolant level was per spec when they left (I checked) and unchanged after the trip. ACC functions normally now.
He e-mailed me this description:
QUOTE
All of a sudden, the car would only produce heat. I would put it on 58, and it would be melting in the car. We manually closed the vents so we wouldn't fry in the car, and then the temperature gauge dropped to almost the bottom of Low. So I opened the vents back up and the temp gauge went back to 9 o'clock.
I pulled over at the next rest area, and shut it off for about 15 minutes. Then we sat in the car for another 10 with the engine idling and air conditioner running. Temp gauge always at 9 o'clock and it eventualy stopped producing hot air all the time. Then it was normal again - it produced artic air again when it was on LO or 58 and warm air when it was on higher settings.
