My first car -- when I was 15 -- was a 5-yr-old 1.2 liter 30bhp 1959 VW beetle. I wrung every bit of fun out of that tiny motor and stone-age suspension I possibly could. (I was a big fan of Jim Clark at the time and painted the bug British racing green, if that gives you a clue.)
I bought my son a 6-yr-old Saturn SL2 for his first beater. After three years, I have recently promoted him into my 1996 900SET (Speedparts Stage II ECU temporarily removed). My fingers are crossed, but the Saab will crash much better than the Saturn, if it comes to that.
Good luck, fellow parent
