Give him the car in the current state. If you turn it down, it will make him want to push it even harder to test it out. Curiosity is a strong thing, and he'll definitely find a way to turn it back up.

That car is going to be much much safer than many cars on the road. Like many have said, any car will go fast. And yes, he will drive fast without you there. Wouldn't you feel safer knowing that he's going fast in a safe car, rather than in a cheap tin can?

Additionally, its so much safer to have a car that has some power, rather than driving an underpowered one. Especially while merging onto highways, etc.

I'm 19, been driving for 3 years and have never gotten a ticket yet. For the first few months of my driving, I drove my mom's '96 900SET, or my dad's '91 MB 420SEL. When he got rid of the 420 (damn powerful car!), I then drove his '97 E320 for a while. Then I got my '95 9000CS, which I soon upgraded to FPT, an incredibly fast car of you've never driven one. Through all this, I never got a ticket. When I first was driving on my own, yes I drove fast. All the time. I've calmed down a bit by now, but I still am not a timid driver. And I never got a ticket. So I guess it depends on the kid too. From your description, your son sounds responsible, and I for one think he deserves that awesome car!
