Simple fact: These are not cheap cars to run, unless you can DIY. Mechanical problems are expensive and in some cases not economical.
There are some engineering weaknesses that cannot be ignored and require replacement parts.
Do a search for Strut Mounts, Clutch, Clutch Cable, 2.3 engine sludge, v6 timing belt, a/c, auto transmission switch and control arms.
If you are looking to spend 3k on a Saab, you will need a reserve of at least 1k to cover for any possible mechanical issues.
If you feel that is too much to have in reserve, then perhaps something Japanese may be more to your budget.
