An assortment of clutch questions... Posted by Clay McNeely [Email] (#497) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Clay McNeely) on Mon, 3 Jan 2005 06:35:29 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hello, everyone. I'm having some issues with the clutch on my 1996 Saab 900 SE Turbo, so maybe I can get a little insight here. If something below is not clear or if you have any questions, please feel free to let me know.
I purchased the car with about 104,000 miles on it. I have all of the receipts and maintenance records, but I haven't looked over them to see what kind of clutch repairs have been done in the past. I'm now at 121,631 miles and I had the clutch cable replaced somewhere in the vicinity of 5,000 miles ago. There have been times when the car would be a little difficult to get into reverse and 5th, but nothing too terribly inconvenient. Most of the time, I would just release the clutch, press it in again, and then the car would go into gear. Like I said, not a big deal.
This past weekend (after experiencing no abnormal problems), I had a ton of difficulty getting the car into 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gear. Sometimes it would "strip" the gears, other times it wouldn't let me take the car out of gear, and then there were times when it was just really hard to get into a gear. It almost felt as if the clutch wasn't fully engaging.
Over the past couple of days, I haven't had any more problems with the clutch or with the car. This morning, however, as I pulled into the parking lot, I noticed that the feel of my clutch suddenly got a lot more firm. I had to use more pressure and force to depress the clutch pedal, but the car shifted fine. I'm inclined to believe that if I had driven the car much further, I would have had a repeat of this past weekend, but I have no proof of that.
Having that said, what type of diagnosis should the car receive? Is it a clutch cable adjustment issue, does the cable need replaced again, is the clutch giving out, should the linkage be upgraded (if it hasn't already been done), or am I missing something else entirely? I've thoroughly debated having the clutch converted to hydraulic, and I'll probably go that route if the clutch does indeed need replaced. At this point, I suppose the possibilities are endless.
If additional information is needed or something needs to be clarified, please do not hesitate to let me know. I certainly do appreciate any comments, feedback, help, and/or suggestions that you may be able to provide. Thank you so much in advance. Drive safely, and KEEP ON SAABING!!!
