At that age and miles, I would expect that the rear seal would be leaking or replaced once already. Often the clutch is renewed when replacing the seal if the owner is expecting to keep the vehicle.

There is a plastic bushing in the shifter that can fail when overloaded. If you are needing to apply great force now, that could accelerate its failure. When that bushing fails, shifting problems do result, but perhaps not as you describe. The plastic bushing can fail more than once for some owners. This has been attributed to 'overly enthusiastic shifting'. So it seems that some folks are quite rough with their there shifting. And such enthusiasm also forces the syncro rings to work much faster that certainly will not increase their life expectancy. The Saab gear boxes are not known for been fast and easy to shift. It seems that some owners might be thinking that this limitation can be overcome by brute force.

Whether the shifter bushing is replace or not, the shifter alignment procedure needs to be performed. If the alignment it shown to be perfect, then one can look for other issues.

Sometimes we get stories where someone moves your vehicle for you, perhaps a tow truck operator, who does not understand the fact that the shifter is locked in reverse by the key. The shifter mechanisms have been bent or otherwise destroyed by folks trying to force the locked shifter to move.

Many cable clutches are trouble free and I do not welcome the leap to a hydraulic replacement as it seems to be an expensive overkill.

Your cable's self adjusting mechanism could have taken up some slack if the petal feel has firmed up and the 'feel' has moved up to a higher petal position. One can reach under the endine side fuse box and pull out on the outer jacket and make that happen as well.

You have not indicated that there is any clutch slipping, so that seems to indicate that that one aspect of the clutch is ok.

Grinding and engagement issues also involve the synco rings which can wear, but that is not a common complaint that I see. This should not vary from day to day, however, such can be affected by the temperature of the gear box (oil) as the operation of the syncro's is oil drag dependant to some extent.

Problems with the shifter are quite common and do create some of the problems which you describe. I would deal with that first. If the rear engine mount was severely trashed, it might contribute to problems by contributing to alignment issues. That could easily be ruled out when inspecting/repairing the shifter bushing.

As for the clutch not disengaging; once the clutch cable slack adjustement is known to be ok, there is the issue of the throwout bearing. The Saab supplied TOBs are quite good and rarely fail. But we have seen a pattern with the bearing draging on the spline shaft. The splines seem to get a deposit of hardened grease and grime. And if the clutch does not fully disengage, if you shift into gear with the brakes released, you may feel that the vehicle wants to lurch. That indicates that the clutch is dragging and transmitting some torque as it should not when disengaged. This can be from the cable slack adjustment or perhaps from crud on the spline shaft interfering with the movement of the TOB or the clutch disk splines. So those are other parts of the equation, but perhaps not an issue at all in this particular case.

And with a troublesome gearbox, it would not be unwarranted to check the level of the GB oil if problems are not resolved via shifter or cable adjustment or repair.
