I own two SAABs (NG900 and C900) and two Subaru Imprezas (FWD and AWD). I have had two more 4WD/AWD Subarus in the past.
I use snow tires on both my Subies in winter. While Subies are great fun, from safe handling standpoint my SAABs are MUCH better snow cars even on all-season tires. Both the Classic 900 and the NG900 are absolutely perfect in any kind of snow or ice condition. Even with balding all-season tires both I and my wife feel MUCH safer in our SAABs on slippery winter roads than in our snow-tire equipped Subarus. We still drive Subarus in snow because they are so much fun when equipped with good snow tires.
The reason we prefer SAABs in snow is that the handling is very predictable. They may have far less traction with worn all-season tires than our Subies with fresh snow tires, but even sliding around we feel in control. It is easy to make corrections because the steering is so communicative and we always feel exactly what the car is doing and can always make the proper correction. Subarus, on the other hand, are not only far less communicative, but have a very strong tendency to oversteer when the limits of traction are exceeded. Even when I overshoot a corner and start sliding at decent speed in my SAABs, I am always calm and able to easily control the slide. Whenever I drive my Subarus in snow/ice, I feel uneasy and have wiped out rear end first many times.
My 1986 SAAB 900 is by far the easiest car to drive in snow or ice. Even compared to a 1998 Subaru Impreza 2.5RS with brand new snow tires.
