Let me first offer great many thanks to the people on this board,
who have been so knowledgeable and so helpful. Without you, SAAB
would not be quite the same (at least in my own personal perception).

I have just finished installing the new gear linkage for my '94 NG900.
With the onset of winter I lost the 1st and 5th gear, and all the fun of driving was gone ...

Using the posts here, I was able to do it myself. I bought the parts from eEuroparts and they arrived the next day.

I'd like to offer a word of caution to others who might wish to undertake the same procedure.

BEWARE OF THE NUTS!

I would recommend first to try to loosen up all the bolts and nuts involved, and NOT TO DO ANY CUTTING OR REMOVAL before you are sure the nuts will come off.

This car I was working on, was 10 years old, and, by now, all the bolts and nuts on it (especially on the underside) have all rusted-over and seized DEAD. Be prepared for a fight. Have many extra-strength torx 40 bits, 6-point 13mm sockets, small hammers, anti-seize liquids, torch/soldering iron, and dremmel with many tips. I've just gone through a terrible experience fighting with these nuts. Believe me or not, I had gone through all of these tools I mentioned above -- with a pause and a trip to the store to buy each next one. I would suggest you save yourself time, and buy them all at once.

You'll need to start slow -- with liquids. (They did not solve the problem, I do not even know if they alleviated it). Heating the nut is often advised in difficult situations. I was afraid to use the torch under the car, so I used a soldering iron -- it did not help. Then move on to sockets and bits (I broke several). Sometimes the bolt's head breaks, which is even worse. This is where dremmel comes in. Now you have to spend several ours working like a dentist, moving forward one millimeter at a time...

Suffice it to say that I am glad that that nightmare is over.

I have one last question: instructions do not mention any grease or lubricant anywhere. The old linkage that I removed, was all covered in grease. The new one is shiny and greese-free. Should the new one be lubricated before putting it on? If so, where exactly?

Thank you,
-- Nick Monyatovsky
