Anti-Lock Braking question...

This is my first vehicle with anti-lock brakes, so if I make some strange assumptions, that would be why.
So I wonder about how the anti-lock braking is working here. I have had cause for it to start activating on multiple occassions (time to get snow tires, but that is a different story).
Sometimes when I hit the brakes, I get a lot of backpressure on the pedal (and I mean a lot), and it really sounds like it is grinding. Other times I get a little bit of back pressure, and it doesn't sound quite as loud, etc. Those times when it is a lot of back pressure, it doesn't seem like it is working very well, but maybe I'm just not hitting the brake quite as hard as other times.
Now, after a few different times of this all happening, one difference seems to be when I have the car in gear versus holding the clutch in, etc. When I have the clutch in and try breaking is when I get the extra hard back pressure. When I am slowing down with both the engine and the brakes, then things seem to work much smoother. Does that sound right? Problem I have is that I got into the habbit of slowing down and not using the engine to help in the breaking...might be bad form on my part, but it was always easier than downshifting 4 times (I know, skip a gear or two to save that trouble, but the habbit is already there!).
Just looking for any input on it. Thanks for any help.
