Any competent mechanic, or friend who has worked on cars should be able to tell you if there are signs of oil in the coolant, or coolant in oil.

The clamps on the hoses can be tightened using a regular screwdriver, but some can be hard to get to, so I think most people do not check them all.

You can ask a mechanic to send a sample of oil to be tested (for coolant and other things).

Tightening the head bolts (unless you have the proper tools), needs to be done by a mechanic, but does not need to be the dealer unless the car is in warranty. Should cost $200-250 (if there is a reason to do it), including replacing the valve cover gasket (not the same thing as the head gasket).

All of that is a lot less money than replacing the headgasket.
