The reversing lights are switched by the neutral safety switch (a.k.a., gear selector switch, a.k.a., transmission range switch). The switch is located on the top of the auto transmission, below the battery. There are other posts in this bulletin that can be helpful. I found http://bellsouthpwp.net/m/a/mattiaso/WebPages/Auto/diy.htm.
Since you have no other symptoms that this switch is bad in other ways, I would suggest the following:
1. Look at the switch and ensure it is aligned correctly. There is a finger that needs to point between two marks on the switch body when the shifter is in neutral. The finger points toward the driver. Alignment will require loosening the switch bolt and rotating to the correct positoin while the shifter is in neutral.
2. If you have side reversing lights, these appear to be run by a relay (my diagram is confusing and I have a 94). My manual (Mitchell) indicates the relay is in the main fuse box under the dashboard. 3-5 are the relay coil, 1-2 are the relay contacts. 1-2 should be open when relay is de-energized (like, in your hands).
3. Of course, there is always the possibility of a hot short. So, pull the reversing lights fuse and see if the lights go out. If they don't, you'll need to dig deeper to determine what circuit is giving up voltage to drive the lights.
Best of luck.
