bad thermostat -> O2 sensor CEL

Hi All,
My new 97 900 SE had CEL on, I pulled codes p0300 (intermittent misfire) and P0133 (front O2 sensor). The car has 112k mi. The engine runs fine. So far, I have replaced plugs (old ones looked okay, but gaps were big). DI cassette looks fine, no smell. I unplugged battery to reset CEL light.
Now I *might* have a thermostat may be stuck open, but but I'm not sure.
When I wen't driving in the mountains I remember noticing how "well" the cooling system worked. Since then I learned that this is a sign of a thermostat stuck open. But I have also found that some of my gauges (tach, turbo boost) intermittently fail and peg to zero. So there's a question if the thermostat or the temp gauge is faulty -- I'll have to do some more mountain driving to clear this up.
Anyway, I'm trying to figure things out, as well as avoid having to buy a new O2 sensor unneccesarily.
Q: Has anyone actually cured a P0133 by replacing the thermostat ? Why does this work ?
Q: If the O2 sensor itself is bad, how long before I should expect the CEL to come back on ?
Q: If the O2 sensor is bad, could that cause the occasional misfire : i.e., P0133 causes P0300 ?
Thanks,
jeff
