The mechanic, after much searching has decided that it is definitely coming from the balance shaft chain area. He has done a search and has lots of reports of the same type of noise (brief, dissapating after warm up), but no reports of failure to the point of catastrophic engine loss. To get in there and change everything is $1600.00 to $1700.00. He suggested that I drive it and see how things go, especially since it will be warming up here soon. I also plan to try autorx just in case something is going on with the oil screen or anything else. Jim's post about the alternator is intriguing. Maybe that's all it is. Any thoughts off the tops of peoples' heads? I only plan to have the car for another 10-12 months, so opinions are invited. Thanks in advance.
