I have done this job and it will make you lose religion befor you sucessfully install the lower clamp properly. Here is what I did.
I cleaned the ball joint before installing the boot. I installed the upper retaining clip before installing the boot. I installed the boot and got it seated on the lower track it sits in. Then the fun part. This clamp is like a key ring with a multi wound coil of metal. I used 2 micro sets of needle nose pliers to get on each end of the coil of wire and used these to expand the ring of metal. I worked and worked, sometimes using a small flat screwdriver also until I got this thing in the track on the boot. Then I used a needle attachment on a greese gun to slide it in between the ball joint shaft and the upper ring seal and filled the boot with grease walking the neadle back and pushing the boot to release air. Be carefull you will overfill the boots. When you are finished with the needle or small screwdriver holding the boot off the shaft push down the upper clip till the boot is in the normal possition it will be in once the bolt is on to releave over greasing prior to mounting the ball joint into the strut. Good luck and have patience.
