Safe to drive 5 miles with broken Serpentine Belt?

Hi all:
I have a 96 900 SE Turbo with 115,000 mileage.
Yesterday my Serpentine Belt came off & started to shred. I cut it & drove 1.5 miles to get home. I lacked power steering but otherwise the car seemed OK.
Qn is: Can I drive the car 5 miles to my mechanic without risk of Engine damage? I understand that this belt runs the auxiliary system including circulating the coolant. If the risk is the engine overheating & that would be indicated by the engine temp gauge then I can simply immediately pull over. What I want to avoid is causing engine damage without even realizing it. Hence I don't want to save $70-100 on towing fees & then cause $1,000-3,000 engine damage.
Any guidance would be appreciated.
Many thanks
Michael
