Sorry to hear that. I was following the posts about your car, and it sounds like you have done some really good work on it. Btw, power steering fluid is flammable and the flash point is fairly low. If the reservoir really cracked or a hose blew, email me offline, I have been looking into the parts for a while.
Seems unlikely the reservoir would crack at a seam. An obstruction is also not likely because of the pressure in the system, but diagrams show a filter cartridge inside the reservoir (I never removed mine). The plastic nipples the hoses are attached to can crack when old.
Most likely a clamp let go. Because it is a steering line, I would replace the clamp rather than tighten it. Use the clamp style that will not cut the hose if you can get it not sure what they are called.
In my case, there are several leaks, some at the joints between the metal tubes and the hose. As far as I know there is no way to tighten those. I am hoping my own hoses hold up until I can find the time to flush everything out, and have a complete new kit made.
I would clean the oil off with whatever cleaner you like to use and verify where it is coming from. If it is the reservoir that cracked, you are actually lucky, that is about the least espensive part of the system that could fail, costs much less than the hoses.
The ps pump generates several hundred psi. There should be a relief valve in the pump to protect it against overpressure, but pressure still spikes in the lines when the steering is run up against the stops. I was warned it is a good way for backyard mechanics to blow rack seals on cars with later model racks.
The spikes can be several times maximum operating pump pressure. Apparently the pressure spikes are the reason ps hoses and fittings are spec'ed around 2000 psi.
Smaller pressure spikes can exist even in the return lines, and those only have normal hose clamps. The hoses under the reservoir have a sharp kink in them, which makes the clamps and joints there a weak point in the system.
(Can't post as "Peter" any more, someone "reserved" my name... <LOL>)
