When I had the '96 900 SET, I bought most of the tools. I did head gasket, changed hoses, pulled an engine from the top, changed turbo, changed thermo, recharged AC, along with other maintenance. But other than the torx head (hollow), I don't remember buying any special tools. But here are some tools that I bought that didn't come with the Craftsman 256 pc mechanics set that I invested for $180. It has pretty much all sizes in different sets from 5mm to 23mm with everything in between and then 27mm socket.
1. Easy out, when I overtorqued the water temp sensor.
2. Needed the 27mm to turn the crankshaft and to remove timing chain tensioner (In my set, but most sets won't go up this large).
3. It also has 23mm wrench, which I needed to hold the cam shaft while loosening the bolt on the timing chain sprocket. (Again, most sets don't include this big size)
4. There is a 22mm(I think) Snap-on flare nut crowfoot wrench that I borrowed from my mechanic for the oil lines to and from the oil cooler. I couldn't find that anywhere.
5. External and Internal torx sockets. Headbolts take External.
6. I got a longer 3/8 inch ratchet, because I needed more lever arm. (I'm a wimp.)
7. I hate knicking my knuckles, so I bought a heavy rubber mallet and pound on the ratchet when breaking loose stubborn bolts.
8. If you ever need to separate engine vs. tranny and have to loosen the flex plate (or flywheel) on an Auto tranny, for some reason, my Craftsman wrench did not fit on the bolts snuggly. I forget the size, it was like a 18mm, but it was kind of strange. I thought I was stripping the bolt. But it was fine.
Other than that, I think everything else was standard. Oh yeah, one more thing... Get one of those ratcheting wrenches either Craftsman or Gearwrench. Boy did I wish I had that when I was trying to loosen the intake manifold and turbo inlet pipe.
