This sounds like failing master cylinder. Check your fluid level. If you are not leaking fluid, the only way for the petal to travel that far is when the MC cup seals are damaged. And once the petal goes to the floor, the soft MC cup seals travel over area of the MC bore that are rusted. These rust deposits cut the seals and the process repeast and the situation goes bad rapidly.
So this is dangerous. And if you don't fix it and an accident results, it is not really an accident is it?
The MC can be reconditioned or replaced. Often a kit includes a new piston assy with the cup seals installed. The MC can be refitted without introducing air into the system, and it done right, without the need to bleed, but bleeding should be done to renew the fluid. Some would argu that the MC corrosion is from a lack of brake fluid bleeding. A good solution is an annual replacement of the fluid in the reservoir for years when the brakes are not bled.
