With regards to Asia, the Dawn works perfectly without damaging anything. It's actually one of the strongest detergent based degreasers on the market. I always have a sturdy 4" paint brush on hand to use with a gallon of HOT water and a half cup of Dawn. Scrub a little, rinse a little, etc. A slightly warm engine helps, but isn't required. Dawn is safe for plastic and rubber. As long as you don't use a pressure nozzle on the hose, there is no need to cover anything. It's the high pressure stream (not the water) that causes all the trouble with the electrical things...DO NOT USE THE SPRAYER AT THE CARWASH!! It will eat your connectors up, as well as cause havoc with gaskets and seals.
I detail my engine compartment twice a year or so...lets me see what's new!
be well,
jt
