Spring cleaning, engine and trans...

I have to clean the area on the driver side of the engine compartment, below the upper radiator hose, and on top of the transmission housing.
My car had more than its share of small leaks over the years (valve cover, coolant hoses, power steering lines and reservoir). I am not a stickler for a sparkling clean engine, but now I have to get some of the old crud off. Trace a couple new leaks and confirm they don't come back.
Anything in this area to watch out for not obvious to a human eye? I don't plan to wash any electrical connectors, but would appreciate any tips about places to cover up before I spray cleaner everywhere.
