I was talking to Walter Wong about my daughter's snapped clutch cable. He asked me if I'd backed off the little nut for the cruise control system and seemed to be suggesting that if this wasn't done the cable could be overstressed, and fail prematurely. (I could be a bit confused about the exact details, the phone connection was very noisy and couldn't hear him clearly), He said it was important to do it this way rather than by prying the clutch lever on the tranny to get enough slack to install the cable.

This is a little alarming because I don't even recall seeing any such thing nor do I recall hearing any mention of it in various manuals and instructions I reviewed before replacing the cable. Anyone know what he means?

He then said it probably wasn't worth towing the car all the way to his shop, and said any local dealership or indie should be able to do it. But if the job is tricky enough that I screwed up, I got to wonder about the indie part.

He also mentioned that if a stronger cable is used like the manual adjusting one on a stiff clutch it is possible to break the bracket right off raising all kinds of hell.

He said, as others have, that it is just about impossible to say on these cars whether a clutch is bad if it is not actually slipping but that one good clue is how it reacts to a new clutch cable - if it still feel just as stiff with a new cable then the clutch is probably bad, but if the action is improved with a new cable the clutch may still be OK - the car in question felt great after I put the new cable on.

Sorry to be obssessing on this but it is hightly irritating to have a car broken down 3000 miles away that I cannot lay hands on, to say nothing of one that has a congenital weakness that can leave you stranded by the roadside every few months, even if you take precautions!
