The oil in the cooling system will not damage things.
At some point after repairs are made, the engine cooling system should be cleaned with a cleaner and water to remove the oil. Run water+cleaner until the engine is hot to allow it to work and to disperse oil.
I don't think that that oil level will have damaged the bearings etc.
I don't know how one figures out which head to pull.
Oil pressure gets higher than coolant pressure, which explain in part why the leak went as it did. But as the leak gets worse, I would expect that coolant would get into the oil.
