1996 900s automatic 124000 mi
about a month ago my car died a couple of times while being driven at low speed, starting from a stop every time i think and only shortly after starting. then it started idling a little rough. so my boyfriend took out the AIC and cleaned it. the car was then out of commission for 3 weeks due to a pothole (unrelated to idling problem) and had to be jump started twice to be moved around the driveway after sitting for a week or 2 each time.
today, we finally got a new wheel and it took a long time to get the car to start while jumping it. we took it for a drive and it idles roughly at low speeds. when we stopped, the idle would cycle up and down maybe 5 times before picking a speed. the car seems totally fine at higher speeds although i noticed that the odometer display dimmed every once in a while.
the car's alternator died in '99 and was replaced. the battery is probably about 4 years old i think.
my boyfriend is gonna pull the alternator out tomorrow and take it to get tested but does anyone else have other suggestions? any advice for getting the alternator out? seems like it's gonna be a PITA.
thanks
