So far I have had 100% success with the "cheap" repair (at least no one have let me know that it failed again)?
The new motor unit is just that, an old style motor unit with the cheap fix installed from factory.
The very first motor units in 95 had a cheaper looking backing plate but even those seems to hold up with the bracket kit installed.
It might be something else that is not aligned properly and put a lot of stress onto the tonneau motor linkage.
That is why I always run a measuring and programming sequence after I'm done with the repair.
Most of the time I have to tweak the virtual settings of end position potentiometer in the TSAS ECU. They might not have done that when they repaired the motor.
So the answer to your question is that it is not possible to do this repair yourself without the Tech 2 scan tool (or ISAT) and the knowledge how to measure and change those settings.
And since the repair has gone bad a couple of times you really need to find a shop that have the time and interest to put it straight.
