Toneau cover (spelling?)

I bought a '96 900 convertible last year. The toneau cover would not open when I went to see the car. I drove it to a Saab dealer & he said the moter was going out and would be about $1800. Obviously I told the owener and said he would have to fix or deduct the amount. He had it repaired at a local shop for just under $300. Worked fine for a few months and then started acting up again. I took it in and $90 later, they fixed it saying I bent the metal walls(?). Now I am back in the same position. I went to 2 repair shops. Bottom line, the original fix was something new that Saab came out with as a "cheap" fix. Both said about 90% won't work long. Guess I am in that group. Now I am back to the $1300 to $1800 to fix. Anyone else have this problem? Seems like I need the entire motor assembly. Has anyone replaced one themselves? Can a "B-" grade back yard mechanic (me) do it? Are there any manuals or websites to go to to give step by step?
Thanks,
Alvin
