I had the same problem with the big nut. I had a huge vice attached to a steel table, so I clamped the strut in the vice and cranked on it with a huge crescent wrench. Even with that method it was tough, but they both came loose.
I would spray this nut as soon as you get the strut/spring unit out so it can soak awhile before you try to separate it.
Also, don't bother trying to separate the ball joint. Just remove the two suspension arms and leave it attached to the steering knuckle. It;s very hard to separate the ball joint without damaging the CV boot or the ball joint's own boot.
