Exhaust Joint sealant - what worked for me

Just thought I'd share an experience from last week. I replaced the exhaust (middle muffler and rear muffler) on my 95 900s w/117k miles, and needed to mate the new middle muffler to the original flex pipe. This looked (to me) like the 2nd time it's been done (I've owned the car for 3 years), so the mating surface of the flex pipe was a bit rough. I wanted to use some gasket sealant between the joints to insure a good tight seal, but didn't want to use the hardening stuff so if I needed to replace the flex pipe in 6 months, it wouldn't be a pain to split the joint apart. What I used was the Permatex Copper gasket maker, rated to 700 degrees F, and recommended for use as exhaust gasket maker. I put a bead of this on both joints I clamped on the new system, and it did a great job of sealing and didn't smell odd nor seem to heat away once I got it good and warm. Time will tell if it causes any problems, but given that the clamps make the joints real tight, I figure the copper silicone should keep sealing until this new exhaust rusts out. :-)
Just fyi - andy
