Clutch issues and advise needed.

Hello Gang.
The story thus far: yesterday, while driving on a highway. i had a hell of a time getting the car into any of the gears and the clutch was sticking to the floor. i had to pull over. it was hard to get it into reverse to pull out the key. on a hunch i check the hydraulic fluid reservoir (it uses the same for the brake fluid) it was a bit low. so i filled it up and attempted to start the car. i had a hard time starting the car. it kept stalling like it was in reverse (i assume it was since i really couldn't engage the clutch). well eventually it started, but the clutch still stayed on the floor. i pumped and pumped and pumped until the clutch reacted normally. but it still was difficult to shift. i eventually got it home and it was a bit difficult to get it into third. so i let the car sit and test drove it again later. the car still shifted hard... but it eventually it drove well enough for me to figure it was back to normal. well this morning it shifted hard again for my wife. so i checked it out. it shifted hard at first, but then smoothed itself out.
My questions: did I do any damage to the clutch by doing what I did? What do I need to do if it acts up again? And is it safe to drive?
Any advise would be greatly appreciated?
