Worn chain guides (pics)

While trying to sort out some of my own engine issues at an independent Saab repair shop, I came across examples of some broken 4-cyl engines with worn chain guides. Posting a couple pics for anyone who might have this problem.
a) Balance chain guide, worn down about 3 millimeters. From an older 9-3, similar to NG900. That engine had 47k miles when scrapped.
b) Balance chain guide and a piece of broken timing chain guide from a 9k with 170k miles, around 1 mm wear on the guides. No indication which broke first, chain or guide. I used the wear on the guides from the 9k for comparison with the 9-3. Compared to the 9-3 with 47k miles, the The 9k chain guides were hardly worn at 170k when the engine broke on that car.
I may have caught mine in time thanks to this board and other posts online (the mechanic thinks the chain noise is not that bad yet)... the pile of scrapped engines made me a bit sad for the people who were not so lucky. Not something most people look for, I suspect.
