My sister who lives in Michigan learned last winter that the standard tires on the 9-3 SE are awful in snow. They just had four Alpine's (by Michelin I think) put on the standard 16" wheels, and she said it made a world of difference. She now feels comfortable driving in the snow. It doesn't sound like you have to get new rims and snow tires to go in the snow. The Alpines were kind of expensive - $480 for the four.
