When I bought my 9-3, I had read about the temperature and air flow knob problem, but thought it was mainly an issue on the 1999 models. It appears, though, that some 2000 models have the problem (as mine did). With 2001 models, hopefully they are now getting it right at the factory.
I noticed that the knobs were rather stiff when I got the car and mentioned that at the 1000 mile service check-up and asked the service manager to check it because of what I had heard about the problem. He assured me that they were fine, but now I think he was just hoping they would be OK. Something snapped on the air flow knob the first really cold morning we had in November, so I made an appointment to take it in and they had to do the full repair (take the bottom half of the dash apart, replace the broken part, and regrease everything). Once it was done, the knobs turned much more smoothly than they did when the car was new.
So...be sure to check the knobs when shopping and if they are very stiff, discuss this with the dealer before making your purchase. Or, buy a 9-3SE HOT with the automatic climate control and avoid the problem altogether.
