Car mags usually don't like out of the mainstream cars, and have a strong herd mentality. This automatically puts Saabs at a disadvantage, since they're built for people who don't follow the herd. Car and Driver, in my opinion, has a number of complete dolts on its staff, with Pat Bedard and Brock Yates the captains of the peanut gallery.
As for the styling issue, if a car isn't good because it was styling goes back 6 years, then how do some cars become classics? I guess to them it's an utter mystery why people buy such an old style as the Porsche 911.
OK, enough of the rant.
As for the BMW vs. 9-3, they're different cars. If you want really good handling, the BMW is better. If you want pretty good handling, and still be able to get through snow while hauling a sofa, the 9-3 is better. Saabs don't really do any one thing oustandingly, but they do many things very well.
